Once one of the most popular actresses in America, Georgia Cayvan earned her place in the history of glass when, in 1893, she became the first person to wear a glass dress.
The dress was made by the E.D. Libbey Glass Company (Toledo, Ohio) from cloth made of glass fibers. The cost for the 12 yards of fabric was $300 -- the equivalent of about $30,000 today.
The dress was exhibited it at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago but was too brittle to be practical.
