From the French for "grayness", grisaille usually refers to monochromatic art. Oil painters often used the technique to create the appearance of relief sculpture.
When used to describe glass, the term grisaille can mean either black paint on clear (or white) glass or painted glass where the colors are monochromatic or very subdued.
