Fact No. 19. (Published on 1/19/2005)

Kate Fowle Meleney

Kate Fowle Meleney is contemporary lampworker living in Washington, DC.

Kate has published numerous articles in Lapidary Journal, Glass Art and Sculpture Magazine -- among others. She has been conducting flameworking workshops for over 10 years and has taught across the USA and internationally. The Renwick Gallery, the Glasmuseum in Denmark and the 2004 Glass Art Society (GAS) Conference are just some of the places Kate has demonstrated her techniques. She has also participated in many invitational and juried glass shows.

More impressive than Kate's resume is her work. Her specialty -- electroforming onto glass -- helps her achieve a style that is distinctive and beautiful. On her web site, Kate describes her new "biotech" series as glass forms inspired by nature (Bio) and enclosing them in an electroformed skin (tech) to add contrast to the glass surface as well as textural interest.

You can see her work on her web site (below) and in the book 1000 Glass Beads (see GlassFacts.Info for 1/15/2005).
